James Whitfield leads Halverson Reed's operations and performance practice. He joined the firm in 2021 after fifteen years at a Cleveland-based boutique operations consultancy, where he served as a partner and led the firm's manufacturing and industrial distribution practices.

Before consulting, Whitfield spent seven years in operating roles at a Tier 1 automotive supplier, ultimately as plant manager of a 600-person facility in northern Ohio. He brings to the firm an operator's instinct for what change a workforce will absorb and what will quietly fail in the second month of implementation. His engagements concentrate on operational due diligence for private equity acquirers, network and footprint optimization, and cost programs that survive the first review cycle without requiring new headcount to administer.

He holds an MBA from the Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business and a BS in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University. He is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt and serves on the board of a community college foundation in northeastern Ohio, where he chairs the workforce development committee.

His writing addresses the operational work that creates lasting margin in the mid-market, with particular attention to the diligence patterns that protect acquirers from inheriting problems that will absorb their first two years of ownership.
